Oothecae

Description

Cahoots Lab 2023: work-in-progress showing + facilitated discussion

Oothecae is a new installation combining sculpture, drawing and projections by Julie Monro-Allison. The idea for Oothecae has evolved from research and experiment undertaken over the past two years and has been in production since February this year. This in-progress showing will trial projecting mock animations onto sculptural forms and textile surfaces. While introducing new materials and new methods to her practice, Julie’s use of these materials and methods in this project nonetheless remains grounded in her usual low tech and hand crafted approach.

We invite you to enter this quiet, immersive space of Oothecae, and to join a facilitated reflection and critical discussion of the work.

Oothecae will be completed over the next four months, with a second in-progress installation to be shown at the Tanks Arts Centre in far north Queensland in June. The creation of Oothecae is supported by artsACT.

SATURDAY 15 APRIL | 1:30PM-3:00PM | F BLOCK, GORMAN ARTS CENTRE | FREE EVENT | REGISTRATION REQUIRED

JULIE MONRO-ALLISON
I’m curious about the relationships between organisms and the spaces they inhabit, and I work with weaving and drawing to make sculptural forms and installations examining these relationships and spaces. Over the past few years I’ve been exploring the interplay of textiles, built environments and biological systems in my work. My current project is Oothecae, a new work combining woven objects, collaged drawings and light projections in a synthesised immersive experience.

Julie was a Cahoots resident in 2021.

When you arrive, you will be given some simple instructions about entering the gallery. The audience will spend some time viewing the artworks, and then take part in a facilitated discussion of the artwork.

The aim of this discussion is to gather audience impressions of the work and the associations it evokes and will be guided by YAH Creative Producer, Zora Pang.

You will also be given a link to an online form, which can be filled out after the event for any thoughts that come to you later.

The artwork will be installed in F Block at Gorman Arts Centre in Braddon.
The discussion will take place in F Block.
