Dream Space (VI)

Description

Cahoots Lab 2023: drop in space for quiet creativity

Dream Space (VI) creates an environment to connect with your personal creative process or craft in the company of others.

Join artist Michele Grimston in this open space for creativity, reflection, and restoration.  Dream Space is an opportunity to work gently and creatively alongside others – carving out some space in your day to distance yourself from distractions and the infinite stimulation of our busy world and engage deeply in the creative process for a period of time.

Textile kits will be available for free during each session, for those who need a little inspiration or prompting to begin, but visitors are also welcome to bring their own project in any medium to work with.  To help hold the reflective energy of the space, the only requirement is that whatever you are working on must be able to be completed by hand – no tools using electricity or batteries can be used in the space.  This includes phones too – you’re invited to leave your technology aside and fully embrace the distractionless environment.  (But of course there are exceptions to this rule for any technology that is required to meet your access needs.)

The artist will be available to support your creativity throughout the session, and you are encouraged to work with your own physical and emotional capacity in the moment.  You can move around, actively create or just absorb the atmosphere.  All of these and more are important parts of the creative process, and there’s absolutely no pressure to ‘make something’ or use your time ‘productively’.

Dream Space will be open on three Saturdays throughout Cahoots Lab. You can drop in any time during opening hours and spend as much or as little time as you like in the space.

SATURDAY 22 APRIL, 29 APRIL & 6 MAY | 11:00AM – 3:00PM | FREE EVENT | REGISTRATION NOT REQUIRED

MICHELE GRIMSTON

I am a visual artist who works with textile-based practices, including embroidery, tapestry and sewing, but often incorporating other media. I am interested in creating things very slowly – exploring the role of labour in my work, and ways that investing our time, attention and care in things can create objects of great meaning and value. I am also interested in the value of these laborious creative  processes themselves and their role in our personal, spiritual and social wellbeing.

I have been working on artworks that explore sharing the value and experience of craft based processes since 2020, including Art While You Wait, a one on one, durational experience presented at Cahoots Lab in 2020 and 2022, and Emotional Repair Cafe, a collective durational experience presented as part of Good Company in 2022.

Michele was a Cahoots resident in 2020.

Dream Space will be located in the Edith Room, which is in the Dear Prudence building, next to Verity Lane Market on Northbourne Avenue.

Dear Prudence is located close to the city bus interchange and the final city tram stop. Paid parking is available across London Circuit.

You’re invited to use this time sitting with others to support your connection to your own creative energy in the space through whatever processes and mediums work best for you. All levels of experience are warmly welcomed – you don’t need to consider yourself an artist or craftsperson to participate – in fact you don’t have to have any artistic experience at all.
