Cahoots Lab 2023: workshop

When it comes to developing a package of materials for casting or representation, is there

a better way of ‘catching attention’ or ‘building relationships’ that’s more engaging and effective than a cold email and the first 10 seconds of a reel?

Treading lightly into the metatheatrical, this collaborative workshop asks its participants to imagine themselves as agents, managers and casting directors as well as in their own roles as artists, collaborators and audience to work out what makes an actor – and specifically, this actor – someone worth their interest.

This is a new workshop, and a new tactic for Linda – but the issues have been brewing away for a while! She has, for a long time, quietly hustled away, training, building credits and hoping to gather enough material to represent her work. Almost a decade later, she realised that she still somehow has barely any footage on hand that shows what she can do, and even less that’s representative of her skill now. Through this workshop, she’s hoping other actors and artists can help her break this conundrum of how best to represent your performance work in a limited amount of time.

Plus, grab a discounted ticket to see ‘Reasons to be Pretty’ by Neil LaBute at Mill Theatre after the workshop when you register! See ‘Special offer from Mill Theatre’ below for details.

SUNDAY 30 APRIL | 1:00PM – 3:00PM | MILL THEATRE AT DAIRY ROAD, FYSHWICK | FREE EVENT | REGISTRATION REQUIRED

All are welcome, and we extend a particular invite to professionals who work in the screen/performance industry – actors, directors, producers, anyone who might work in casting or management, as well as artists, arts-adjacent workers and those who work in business/marketing roles who have to navigate promotion/self-promotion/cross promotion processes.

LINDA CHEN
I am an actor-performer and writer. I am currently focussed on working out sustainable development processes as a writer/performer, especially with regards to play, rest and trauma; re-examining and re-mobilising the community-building arm of my practice in hand with the ‘marketing’ aspect of my career.

Linda was a Cahoots resident in 2021.

Participants will be asked for their impressions of the actor after viewing various styles and stages of ‘marketing’ material, extrapolate some kind of ‘whole’ picture of them from this material and then be asked for their advice on what else they would like to see, or what they would have preferred to have seen in the first place to want to work with or sign this actor. Together, they will (hopefully) find a ‘hook’ for this artist, and the right approach to presenting this hook to people of interest.

The workshop will take place at the Mill Theatre, which is located in Building 3 at 1 Dairy Road, Fyshwick.

Free parking is available.
